16 KCBS events in 1 weekend provides lots of movement
This weekend KCBS sanctioned 16 contests around the country. With more than 500 teams competing this weekend it was a big weekend for changes in the rankings.
First off I want to say congrats to TheSlabs.com on their Reserve Grand, they are still the top ranked team without a counting Grand, so this weekend was certainly bitter sweet. They are knocking on the door and I am sure will be bringing home the top prize sometime this summer. Good luck to TheSlabs.com and congrats for their finish this weekend.
Pellet Envy took grand in Memphis this weekend and closed the gap between them and Bub-Ba-Q from 77.72 to 35.719 points. Bub-Ba-Q took the weekend off and Pellet Envy took full advantage of it. Pellet Envy should be going head to head later this summer as Pellet Envy heads to Dillard, Ga in August. Dillard is one of the toughest fields in competition BBQ and will provide plenty of competition for 2 of the best. I believe this marks Pellet Envy's first trip to Dillard. Dillard regularly draws the top teams from across the country to the picturesque setting in the North Georgia Mountains. A spot in Dillard is coveted around the southeast, and not many folks give them up once they get their spot, which left some folks asking "How did Pellet Envy get into Dillard?". I imagine that being one of the top touring teams in the country has at least a couple of perks.
The Long Dawgs followed up a Grand in North Augusta with a 3rd place finish in Memphis to continue their climb in the rankings.
Pigdawg took Reserve Grand in a very strong field in Sallisaw, OK. Also in Sallisaw Butcher's walked away with a 180 pin for brisket and a top 5 call in Pork. I am sure a little prime dust and beef injection helped make that 180 possible. If you haven't tried Butcher's yet, pick up a bag of the brisket injection and I am sure you will see the difference.
Rescue Smokers continued their dominance in Fort Valley, Ga @ a GBA sanctioned event, winning grand.
iQue also took grand in Sandwich, MA. Congrats to them on continuing their winning ways.

Memorial Day weekend plays host to lots of action
National BBQ Rankings are a day late with the update because of the holiday weekend. I hope that everyone took a moment to remember everyone who has given everything to our country. Memorial Day weekend also played host to a ton of great contests around the country. Most every team from the top 25 was in action somewhere and while the rich got richer, there were also some nice surprises this weekend.
Wicked Que takes Grand in Young Harris, besting the field including #1 ranked Bub-Ba-Q. Wicked Que opened the weekend with a perfect 180 in chicken, not a bad way to start the awards. They carried that momentum through the awards and claimed the top spot. The grand moved them up 21 spots to 74th overall. Wicked Que is now a part of Team Egg as they have switched from a Stumps Stretch to a couple of XL Eggs. Young Harris hosted several all Egg teams this weekend and those Egg teams showed well earning 1/3 of all awards given in Young Harris.
The big money for the weekend was in South Carolina, a Damn Good Dawg, The Long Dawgs took top honors besting a who's who crowd including Swamp Boys, Cool Smoke, Smoking Triggers, and Pellet Envy. The top 4 spots went to teams cooking on Jambo Pits. The Long Dawgs are up 18 spots to 51st in the overall and I believe this was Dan's first Grand. he has been knocking on the door for a few months now and finally broke through in a big way. Congrats to The Long Dawgs.
Lotta Bull won Grand in Jefferson City, TN which is the first Grand for Mike Davis and Lotta Bull in nearly a year. Their last Grand coming in Haleyville, Al back in June 2009. The moved them up 1 spot to 16.
TheSlabs.com was up 1 spot to 31st but is still searching for that grand as the highest ranking team without a grand championship counting towards their rankings. I am sure they are working hard to remedy that situation.
This upcoming weekend is a big weekend in BBQ with nearly 20 events around the country. Good luck to everyone and safe travels if you are hitting the road this week.

TheSlabs.com are on the hot seat and Cool Smoke wins Shoulders @ MIM.
Rankings have been updated to include the results from this past weekend including Memphis in May, which is the second bonus event for the year. Cool Smoke took shoulders in Memphis in May and Yazoo Delta Q took Grand and Whole Hog. That hog win moves Yazoo Delta Q into the top spot in the Whole Hog rankings, unseating Jack's Old South, who many consider to be the best hog cook around.
I also noticed that TheSlabs.com is currently the highest ranked team without a grand in their score. TheSlabs.com have come close this year with 4 top 10 finishes including a 3rd place finish @ North Little Rock in the first bonus event of the season. Their top 10 finishes include two 3rd places, one Reserve Grand, and a 10th place in Claremore. I know that TheSlabs.com typically compete in the very competitive mid-west, but I wishing them luck each week until they get their first grand since DeSoto in 2007. There top 35 ranking is a testament to their consistency, but I would love to see them move off the hot seat and pass the honor down to Ponderosa BBQ. So if you see TheSlabs.com this weekend wish them luck and let's hope that this is the weekend they get the last call.

Lots of movement in the top 200
With 100's of teams competing this past weekend we saw lots of movement in the top 200 this week. Rescue Smoker took another Reserve Grand in Waynesboro, GA, while Bub-Ba-Q took Reserve Grand in Rome, GA where Team Top Chick took the top spot.
Bixby has the most teams at close to 100 and had most of the Midwest heavy hitters in attendance, but a road team took the top spot as Quau. PigDawg, Pellet Envy, Twin Oak, Little Pig Town, Butcher's, and Buffalo's all finished in the top 10. I believe that Quau is currently atop the KCBS Team of the Year and didnt hurt himself this weekend.
There were 11 contests this weekend with 10 KCBS and 1 FBA event. This weekend is Memphis in May, which is a bonus event this year for the National BBQ Rankings and I suspect that Jack's Old South's noticeable absence this weekend can be attributed to getting ready for the World Championship.
New South BBQ will be heading to Columbus for the Pig Bowl in a couple of weekends. If you get a chance to you should head to Columbus for a fun contest, even if you don't compete.
Another good weekend of BBQ and I hope everyone talked to momma on Sunday.

Winchester added
Just a quick update. I have added the Winchester results. Again congrats to everyone that walked. MBN website appears to be now for, so I will add them when I get them.

Jack's Old South Wins Lulu, MS.
Jack's Old South takes the top honor in Lulu, MS which breaks their streak of Reserves Grands from the last 2 contests.
The rankings were run without the Winchester and Marianna contests, because they haven't been posted yet. I would like to give a shout out to Dan from The Long Dawgs for taking Reserve Grand in Winchester this past weekend.
Swamp Boys got back to their winning ways in Venice, FL taking top honors and closing back in on Pellet Envy, who took 4th in Lulu, MS.
Also big congrats to Sam and Diane with Jus-Fer-Fun as they took Reserve Grand in Auburn, AL this weekend. Glad to see them back at the top.
Overall another big weekend for BBQ with contests around the country. 2 events with more than $20k in prize money and three 50+ team contests in MO in one weekend. There were over 130 teams in Maryland this weekend as well, with Chix, Swine, and Bovine taking the top honors and state championship. I have heard some grumblings from teams way down the list about Chix, Swine, and Bovine cooking the judging class just a couple of days before the contests in MD. If you finish in the 100's you should probably think about what you were doing Friday and Saturday instead of worrying about what the other guy was doing on Thursday.

First big weekend of the season.
There were 8 contests with past weekend with 6 KCBS and 2 FBA events being held around the country. Bub-Ba-Q pulled away a little from Pellet Envy didn’t compete this past weekend. With Swamp Boys still on the shelf several new teams are looking to enter the top 5.
Jack’s Old South took Reserve Grand this weekend in Dothan, AL for back to back Reserve Grands, but Myron hasn’t found the top spot on the podium since sweeping the MBN event in Murphysboro back in September. Many of you will remember that contests as one of the “Pitmaster” contests, the one where some drunk was jabbing his finger in Trigg’s chest. You have to go back to May 22, 2009 and Young Harris, GA KCBS event to find a Jack’s Old South Grand that wasn’t in an MBN event. Jack’s Old South’s last 7 Grands have come in MBN events, so once the MBN season really gets cranking I think that Bub-Ba-Q and everyone else are going to have their hands full trying to keep Myron out of the top spot. With 2 MBN events to choose from this weekend, 1 next weekend, 2 in GA in May as well as Memphis in May(a bonus event) and the Safeway dual sanctioned event in DC Jack’s Old South is heading into their money part of the season and I am sure he is licking his chops to get to the big money in Memphis and add a 4th World Championship.

Plowboys BBQ & Butcher BBQ Competition Class Tulsa, OK
Plowboys and Butcher's are teaming up and offering a competition class. I love this type of class because you get to taste 2 different, but winning, styles. When I took the High Tech v Old School class it was great to be able to really see the difference between different styles of competition bbq and know that both score. Anyway there is an ad in the rotation for the class if you want some more information or visit the link below.

Rescue Smokers wins Grand, Pellet Envy takes #2 spot
Pellet Envy finished 5th this weekend in Missouri and moves into the #2 spot in the overall as Swamp boys falls to 3rd place. With Swamp boys on the shelf for a couple of weeks, now might be the time for some new folks to move into the top 5. Jack's Old South is closing the gap on the top spots as Myron and gang took a couple of walks this weekend in Thomaston and finished with a Reserve Grand.
Rescue Smokers continues their roll and takes top honors with Grand Championship in Thomaston. They have really been nailing it recently and have continued their quick climb to the top of the rankings. Good luck to them the rest of the season.

Pellet Envy off to a fast start
The season is just underway and it has already been a Huge success for Rod Gray and Pellet Envy. Having won the 1st bonus event of the year and the big money contest 2 weekends ago and following it up with a Reserve in Hammond Pellet Envy is having a whale of a season already.
This weekend kicks off the FBA's Triple Crown series in GA, with the Thomaston Smoke on the Water contest. This is a really terrific event hosted on a private lake. The bluegrass bands are top notch and a huge crowd always shows up to support this contest. New South BBQ will be heading down early on friday to get setup and enjoy the weekend. The weather looks to be fantastic this weekend.
Also of note, Bub-Ba-Q seems to be pulling away in the top spot after a solid 3rd place finish @ Rio Rancho this past weekend. Swamp Boys seems to have lost their edge after giving it all away at his competition class and will be on the shelf for a couple of weeks. I am sure he will be chomping at the bit to get back to his winning ways. Meanwhile on the strength of his grand in Little Rock, Pellet Envy has closed the gap between 2nd and 3rd considerably and will be looking to take the number 2 spot in the coming weeks. Cool Smoke was also up 8 spots after Tuffy's Reserve Grand in Little Rock.
The next bonus event will be Memphis in May and then the American Royal Invitation in Oct. Jack's Old South is sure to be in the hunt for his 4th World Championship at Memphis in May.
Good luck and travel safe....
